Acute urticaria: what to do when it occurs

Urticaria is a difficult skin reaction to predict in advance. However, if a person is predisposed to suffer from it, it is important that he tries to avoid as much as possible the triggering causes (eg food allergens, drugs, insect bites, viral or bacterial infections, exposure to mechanical or physical stimuli, such as physical exertion, rubbing, cold and hot).

  • In most cases, the cutaneous manifestations of acute urticaria regress spontaneously within a few days.
  • If the itching symptoms are extremely annoying, antihistamines are the first choice treatment. In fact, these drugs are able to inhibit the effect of histamine, thus reducing itching and erythema in most people.
  • In the most persistent cases and in very severe forms, the doctor could also indicate the intake of corticosteroids systemically .
