Definition

Pancreatitis is an acute or chronic inflammatory process involving the pancreas. Acute forms arise suddenly, with more violent symptoms, and tend to heal (if the cause is eliminated), while chronic forms are more difficult to treat. There are numerous predisposing causes, such as alcoholism, gall bladder cancer, cigarette smoking, infections, pancreatic or duodenal tumors, hypercalcaemia and some medications.

Further indications

The characteristic symptom of pancreatitis is pain; more violent in chronic forms, profound, it can be continuous or intermittent (in chronic forms it tends to worsen after meals extending for one or two hours); it is generally located between the area below the stomach and the navel; lateral irradiation is frequent. Painful symptoms are relieved by sitting or flexing the trunk forward. When this does not happen it is important to promptly alert health workers.
