What does the failure to reconstruct the injured anterior cruciate ligament involve?

In the opinion of the experts, sportsmen and non-sportsmen who suffer the rupture of one of the two anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) of the knee should undergo the reconstruction operation and do so a short time after the injury.

For what reason?

The lack of a healthy anterior cruciate ligament destabilizes the knee joint and can make even ordinary daily activities difficult, such as climbing stairs several times a day or walking for several minutes during the day. But that is not all.

Without the support of the anterior cruciate ligament, in fact, the femur of the affected leg slips and repeatedly presses on the tibia, causing premature deterioration of the femoral articular cartilage.

Therefore, delaying or not undergoing LCA reconstruction accelerates the arthrosis (or osteoarthritic) processes typical of old age.

The only people for whom reconstruction is not a priority are the elderly and those suffering from serious illnesses, as these individuals would hardly be able to scrupulously follow the post-operative rehabilitation program.
