Does reading in poor light hurt your eyes?

A widespread popular belief holds that reading with dim light has negative effects on vision. A study published by the British Medical Journal, however, has shown that this is not always true. Of course, reading in low light conditions requires more effort to distinguish words, creating problems, in terms of eye fatigue and headache, especially in those who already have visual defects. However, it would not pose a risk to eye health, as they can relax as soon as they are closed.
