Indications GENTAMYCIN HEXAL ® Gentamicin

GENTAMYCIN HEXAL ® is used in the clinic for the treatment of infectious or high-risk skin infections.

eczema, dermatitis, folliculitis, furunculosis, burns, ulcers and infectious excoriations are the main clinical applications for the use of GENTAMYCIN HEXAL ®.

Mechanism of action GENTAMYCIN HEXAL ® Gentamicin

Gentamicin, an active ingredient with a microbicidal activity belonging to the aminoglycoside family, is one of the most effective antibiotics for topical use.

In fact, taken topically, it is not absorbed systemically, concentrating mainly in the center, where by crossing the bacterial wall using a specific channel protein, it is able to reach the cytoplasmic environment by binding the 30S ribosomal subunit.

This bond prevents the tRNA from transporting the amino acid useful for lengthening the peptide chain, thereby compromising the entire protein synthesis, and therefore also the metabolic and structural activity of the bacteria.

The dose dependent microbicide efficacy of gentamicin could be partially compromised by the ability of various microorganisms to implement a series of resistance mechanisms characterized by:

  • Reduction of bacterial permeability to the antibiotic;
  • Structural variation of gentamicin biological targets;
  • Expression of membrane proteins endowed with gentamicin inactivating activity.

All the aforementioned mechanisms are carried out more frequently following antibiotic treatments that last over time, which allow the microorganism to develop resistance gene sequences often present on mobile structures such as plasmids.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

1 IDENTIFICATION OF EFFECTIVE GENTAMYCIN DOSAGES IN NEWBORNS

Ann Pharmacother. 2012 Jul 10.

Study that represents the recent efforts of the various international scientific communities in identifying an effective dosage for gentamicin able to improve health conditions in newborn patients suffering from infectious diseases, reducing potential side effects to a minimum.

2 . THE GENTAMICIN IN PREVENTING INFECTIONS AFTER THE CESAREO PARTY

Trials. 2012 Jun 21; 13 (1): 89.

Interesting work that evaluates the effectiveness of gentamicin in preventing surgical site infections following cesarean delivery. The data seem encouraging even when compared to other antibiotics.

3. GROWING GENTAMICIN GATES IN OBESE PATIENTS

JRSM Short Rep. 2012 Apr; 3 (4): 25. Epub 2012 Apr 25.

Study that assesses the need to correct gentamicin dosages in patients with a high body mass index, in order to properly preserve the antibiotic effects of the therapy.

Method of use and dosage

GENTAMICINA HEXAL ®

Topical cream with 0.1% gentamicin equal to 0.166 grams of gentamicin sulphate per 100 grams of product.

The treatment of common infectious skin lesions involves the application of the correct amount of cream, directly on the region concerned, 3-4 times a day until the first signs are reduced.

The therapeutic procedure could be prolonged through the use of 1-2 applications a day until the complete regression of the symptomatology.

The entire treatment period should be supervised by your doctor.

Warnings GENTAMYCIN HEXAL ® Gentamicin

Given the numerous studies present in the literature that support the ototoxic potential of gentamicin even when used dermally, it would be appropriate to pay particular attention to the use of GENTAMYCIN HEXAL ® in patients suffering from auditory-vestibular pathologies.

The aforementioned precautions would also be important for patients suffering from renal and skeletal muscle disorders.

For these reasons, the patient being treated with GENTAMICINA HEXAL ® should undergo periodic checks on his state of health, taking care to promptly report new signs and symptoms to his doctor.

The inadequate use of antibiotics could facilitate the spread of microbial strains resistant to the common antibiotic therapy, thus aggravating the clinical course of the pathology while prolonged use of gentamicin could sensitize the patient towards this drug.

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING

The use of GENTAMYCIN HEXAL ® is generally contraindicated during pregnancy and in the subsequent period of breastfeeding given the results of very recent studies that support the ototoxicity of gentamicin on the fetal auditory system.

Interactions

The irrelevant systemic absorption that follows the application of GENTAMICINA HEXAL ® allows to minimize the potential drug interactions with other active ingredients capable of altering the therapeutic properties of the drug.

Contraindications GENTAMYCIN HEXAL ® Gentamicin

The use of GENTAMYCIN HEXAL ® is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the active ingredient, to structurally related drugs and to the relative excipients.

Undesirable effects - Side effects

GENTAMYCIN HEXAL ® is generally well tolerated and has no clinically relevant side effects.

The most frequently observed adverse reactions usually concern the area of skin on which the cream has been applied, with the appearance of erythema, eruptions, redness and itching and only rarely more serious hypersensitivity reactions.

Note

GENTAMYCIN HEXAL ® is a drug subject to medical prescription.
