Next Day Pill: in short

Reflections

If on the one hand the average age of the first sexual intercourse has greatly decreased in the last decade, on the other hand the sale of the morning-after pill has undergone an impressive peak upwards. The statistics speak for themselves: over 350, 000 blisters containing the morning-after pill were sold, a clear indication of lightness in dealing with sexual experiences, as well as ignorance about sex education among young people and, in particular, among the very young . It is estimated that approximately 59% of women who have used the morning-after pill at least once are between 14 and 20 years old.

Responsibility

It should be made clear to imprudent young people that sex is not a game, therefore, when they consider themselves "old enough" to consume a relationship, they should also be aware of the possible consequences, take responsibility and be ready to welcome any eventuality. The morning-after pill is certainly the simplest loophole, but not the right one when you "take things too lightly". Of course, mistakes can happen to anyone, but one should always act with prudence, never with lightness and superficiality.

Summary on the morning-after pill

To fix the concepts ...

Next day pill

Progestin-based pharmaceutical preparation useful in emergency contraception: this can be taken following a sexual relationship potentially at risk of pregnancy

Classification of the pills of the following day

  1. NorLevo® or Levonelle®: morning-after pill currently sold in Italy
  2. Yuzpe method: morning-after pill based on estrogens and progestogens. No longer in use.

Dosage of the morning-after pill

  • NorLevo® or Levonelle: Dosage of progestin 20-30 times higher than that of the classic estroprogestinica contraceptive pills (1.5 milligrams)
  • Yuzpe method: much higher dosage: 100 milligrams of ethinyl estradiol in association with 0.5 milligrams of levonorgestrel

Mechanism of action of the morning-after pill

The morning-after pill is able to:

  • stop ovulation, if this has not yet occurred
  • hinder the passage of sperm towards the uterus
  • prevent fertilization of an already released egg
  • alter sperm function

The morning-after pill does not in any way hinder the growth and proper development of the embryo, should the zygote have already been implanted.

Estimate of the effectiveness of the morning-after pill

  • Administration within 12 hours of unprotected intercourse: 99.5% success
  • Administration between 12 and 24 hours from unprotected sex: 85% of success
  • Administration between 24 and 72 hours from unprotected intercourse: 58% of success

Risk factors for a possible unwanted pregnancy

  • failure of natural contraceptive methods
  • accidental breakage of the condom
  • non-compliance with the correct frequency of taking the estroprogestinica pill
  • detachment of the contraceptive transdermal patch
  • sexual abuse and violence
  • error in calculating potentially non-fertile days

In all these cases, the woman could use the morning-after pill.
