E529 CALCIUM OXIDE

Calcium oxide (CaO), otherwise known as quicklime, is a calcareous-derived compound. It appears as white masses of odorless, hard granules or white to gray powder.

Mainly it has the function of a synthetic acidity regulator. Calcium oxide is also used in the manufacture of sugar to remove impurities, in baked goods as a stabilizer and a nutrient for yeast. Furthermore, it is used in the preparation of sausage casings.

It can be used in various foods, such as in some ice creams, in beers, liqueurs, etc. In the field of industry, it can also be used in the manufacture of bricks, insecticides, etc.

Warning: direct contact with this additive can cause significant damage to the skin and mucous membranes, and can have very corrosive effects when diluted in water, where it turns into calcium hydroxide.
