Turbid urine - Causes and Symptoms

Related articles: Turbine urine

Definition

The turbid appearance of urine is usually due to the presence of white blood cells (pus), carbonates, phosphates, uric acid, proteins, lipid material (chiluria and lipiduria), bacteria, mucus, red blood cells, flaking cells or spermatozoa.

In addition to being characterized by a non-clear appearance, turbid urine may be accompanied by other symptoms, including odor, difficulty and burning during urination, a feeling of having to urinate more than necessary and an inability to completely empty the bladder.

In most cases, this alteration is an indication of an infection or inflammation of the urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, urethra and bladder); the turbid urine is therefore typically associated with cystitis, pyelonephritis, ureteritis, urethritis and various sexually transmitted diseases.

In humans, turbid or reddish urine may also indicate inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis).

The turbidity of the urine is also found in the presence of kidney stones and other nephropathies.
