Onycholysis - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Onycholysis is the partial or total detachment of the nail from the nail bed. The process can start from the side margins or from the free edge, to then extend. Initially, the onicolisi does not cause any discomfort, except to cause a chromatic alteration of the nail plate (black nail). When the detachment increases, however, the nail deforms and can separate completely from the nail bed, then fall.

Onycholysis may occur due to trauma (shoes that are too tight, stroke of duration, injuries, etc.), circulation disorders, Candida albicans infection, psoriasis or thyrotoxicosis. In some cases, it represents an adverse reaction to a drug (eg tetracycline)
