Definition

Hunger is a sensation that coincides with the physiological need to eat. It is a reaction triggered by the hypothalamus: in it there are the nerve centers that control hunger and satiety. The hypothalamus, therefore, regulates eating behavior on the basis of information received from the whole organism, relating to the state of energy reserves.

If neglected for a long time, hunger can take on unpleasant characteristics, as it causes spasms and pain in the epigastric region.

The diseases that can be associated with a continuous feeling of hunger include diabetes, hyperthyroidism and insulinoma (pancreatic cancer).

Hunger must be distinguished from the desire to eat and from the false appetite, or rather from the psychological need to consume food whose ingestion procures pleasure.
