Fingers - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The fissures of the fingers are fissures that develop around the nails, on the finger-tips and in the interdigital spaces.

These lesions are very painful and can be deep (in some cases, they can resemble linear cuts caused by a pointed knife), but they are rarely more than a couple of centimeters long. Sometimes, the fissures of the fingers are associated with the loss of serum or serum-blood secretion, with the risk of secondary infections.

Ragadiform skin lesions are often due to extreme dryness, alterations of the normal hydrolipidic film and dehydration of the skin, which make the area thin, less elastic and prone to "breakage".

Finger fissures occur more frequently during the winter, following exposure to very cold outdoor temperatures and can also be caused by mechanical stress and rubbing trauma.

Finger fissures can also be favored by chemical aggressions and by the presence of skin pathologies, such as contact allergies, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.
