Indications DURAPHAT ® - Fluorine

DURAPHAT ® is a dental medicine used in the prevention of tooth decay and in the prevention of decalcification in areas surrounding dental equipment.

Mechanism of action DURAPHAT ® - Fluorine

DURAPHAT ® is a sodium fluoride drug, intended for topical application, directly on the teeth.

Despite the different method of application, the effects of topical fluorine are the same as the systemic one, but concentrated mainly in the application site.

More precisely, fluorine allows:

  • stabilize the hydroxyapatite crystals present at the bone and dental level, facilitating the formation of fluoridoxiapatite, a mineral characterized by the most stable chemical-physical properties;
  • induce the biological activation of osteoblasts, bone tissue cells responsible for the synthesis of new bone matrix;
  • prevent the formation and progression of tooth decay.

Furthermore, topical intake allows the creation, in the presence of saliva, of a suspension of fluoride which concentrates mainly at the level of dental enamel, thus making it more resistant to attack by pathogenic microorganisms.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

1. FLAVORED DENTAL PASTRIES

Quintessence Int. 2012 Mar; 43 (3): 221-8.

Work that seeks to better characterize the pharmacokinetic characteristics of fluorine-based dental pastes. The main advantage is due to the higher concentrations of fluorine that are realized at the local level.

2. EFFECTIVENESS AND SAFETY OF THE LOCAL FLUORO APPLICATION

Evid Based Dent. 2011; 12 (3): 70-1.

Study that demonstrates the greater efficacy of dental pastes and fluoride-based solutions to be applied locally, in preventing tooth decay, while also keeping the possible side effects limited.

3. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF DURAPHAT

Shanghai Kou Qiang Yi Xue. 2011 Apr; 20 (2): 159-63.

The application of Duraphat has proven effective in protecting deciduous teeth from tooth decay. However, a higher concentration of fluoride in the tooth enamel could be achieved through closer administration than expected.

Method of use and dosage

DURAPHAT ®

Dental suspension containing 50 mg of sodium fluoride, equal to 22.6 mg of fluorine in 1 ml of suspension.

DURAPHAT ® should be applied by the dentist, in balanced doses to the type of dentition of the patient, after removing the excess plaque.

The treatment should be repeated every 3 - 6 months depending on the severity of the clinical picture and the therapeutic effect sought.

Warnings DURAPHAT ® - Fluorine

DURAPHAT ® must necessarily be applied by a dentist, after having examined the possible presence of conditions incompatible with this therapy, such as serious injuries of the oral cavity.

The patient must remember to present himself on an empty stomach, avoiding the use of fluoride-based preparations in the days following the application of the medicine.

DURAPHAT ® contains alcohol.

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING

The presence of alcohol in DURAPHAT ® limits its use during the entire pregnancy and in the subsequent period of breastfeeding.

Interactions

The topical application of DURAPHAT ® allows to minimize the potential interactions with elements and active ingredients able to reduce the absorption and bioavailability of fluorine.

The presence of alcohol in DURAPHAT ® must also be taken into consideration.

Contraindications DURAPHAT ® - Fluorine

The use of DURAPHAT ® is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or to the relative excipients (including rosin), ulcerative gingivitis, stomatitis and bronchial asthma.

Undesirable effects - Side effects

Topical application of sodium fluoride appears to be very well tolerated and free of any particular side effects.

Hypocalcemia, nausea, vomiting and dental fluorosis were only rarely observed at particularly high doses.

Note

DURAPHAT ® is a medicine sold only on prescription.
