It is inserted into the upper facet of the large tuberosity of the humerus. By contracting, it abducts and extracts the arm.
With its action, it abducts and rotates outside (extraterridges) the arm, in synergy with the action of the deltoid. It also helps to bind the humerus to the shoulder and to tighten the joint capsule.
It is innervated by the suprascapular nerve (C4-C6).
The supraspinatus is the most frequently damaged muscle among those that make up the rotator cuff.
