Rupture of the uterus - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The rupture of the uterus can be spontaneous, for example when it is caused by contractile activity or overdistension due to multiple pregnancy, polydramnios or abnormal fetal positions (eg breech presentation). Furthermore, it can be caused by a violent abdominal trauma or by the improper performance of manual or instrumental obstetric maneuvers (eg iatrogenic perforation or excessive use of uterotonic drugs to induce childbirth).

Uterine rupture is favored by the presence of scars on the uterus. These may represent the outcome of surgical operations, such as myomectomies (removal of myomas or fibroids), or other cesarean parts. Other predisposing factors are congenital uterine malformations, collagenopathies, abnormal placentations and excessive fetal volume (one of the most common causes is hydrocephalus).
