Lipotimia - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Lipotimia is a sensation of sudden weakness, not accompanied by a complete loss of consciousness. The episode is short-lived and preceded by prodromes.

Lipotimia can be caused by stress, fatigue, excessive heat, poor or poor oxygenation of the environment, hypoglycemia, fasting, anemia, bleeding, burns, physical trauma or intense emotions, and prolonged immobility.

Compared to syncope, loss of consciousness is not abrupt and the patient has warning signs. In lipotimia, in fact, the subject feels weak, unstable and complains of blurred vision and nausea. Furthermore, pallor, cold sweat, muscular atony, arterial hypotension and lowering of the heart rate can be found.
