Why can babies seem to have crooked eyes?

During the first months of life, the newborn tends to fix objects and people using, alternatively, one eye or the other. The results are rapid and brief glances, in which it seems that the gaze can cross or diverge outwards. This should not alarm parents: in newborns it is often difficult to have a true squint.

In the first months of life, in fact, children are not yet able to coordinate the movements of both eyes and use them simultaneously to focus objects. The defect is almost always temporary and disappears with growth, when the child learns to keep both eyes oriented on the same visual axis. Instead, consult the ophthalmologist if the problem persists beyond 6-7 months, in order to ascertain the presence of other visual disturbances.
