Dry Scalp - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Dry scalp is a problem often associated with a sensation of itching, discomfort or burning.

In most cases, this symptom is due to the lack of cutaneous lipids and / or dehydration. The alteration of the hydro-lipid balance can be due to dysfunctions of the sweat and / or sebaceous glands, which do not produce sufficient water and sebum, depriving the scalp of their physiological protection.

Dehydrated and alipidic skin can also result from an avitaminosis (especially when vitamin A intake is low). Scalp psoriasis can also lead to dandruff, itching and peeling.

The dry scalp can also depend on external factors. This manifestation can be found, in fact, due to the use of treatments that favor the disintegration of keratin or excessively aggressive detergents (such as alkaline or very degreasing shampoos, too alcoholic hair lotions, etc.). Frequent washings, staying in too cold environments and using the hair dryer with too hot air and in close contact with the skin can also promote this sensation.

A dry scalp has visible effects on the hair, which are brittle, dull and fragile.
