Related articles: Ectropion

Definition

The ectropion consists of the outward rotation of the edge of the lower eyelid. The result is tear changes, irritation and dry eyes.

In most cases, ectropion is due to age-related tissue hyperlability. Other causes include the formation of nodules, cysts and scars in the eyelid, post-surgical outcomes, trauma, burns and dermatological changes.

Ectopion is also a complication of paresis of the VII cranial nerve, stroke and other neurological conditions that cause facial paralysis. Congenital ectropion (present from birth) may be associated with Down syndrome and some forms of ichthyosis.
