Mullein in Herbal Medicine: Property of Mullein

Mullein flowers are used to prepare emollient, anti-inflammatory and mucolytic infusions, useful mainly for the respiratory tract; for external use, the decoction is suitable for hemorrhoid therapy and as a skin anti-inflammatory.

Biological activity

As mentioned, the mullein is a plant with expectorant, emollient and anti-inflammatory properties, which are mainly carried out at the level of the airways; not by chance, this plant is part of the composition of pectoral infusions and herbal teas with bechic and expectorant action.

The aforementioned activities are mainly attributable to the mucilages and saponins contained within the same plant.

In addition to the mullein, diuretic, diaphoretic and anti-haemorrhoidal properties are also attributed.

Mullein in folk medicine and homeopathy

The anti-inflammatory and emollient properties of mullein are well known in folk medicine, which uses its flowers inside infusions to treat irritations of the throat, cough, phlegm and gastrointestinal irritations.

Externally, however, traditional medicine uses mullein in decoctions used in the event of burns, haemorrhoids, irritations of the skin and mucous membranes.

Mullein is also used in homeopathic medicine, where it can be found in the form of granules, drops and mother tincture.

In this context the plant is used in case of rhinitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, tracheitis, cough and trigeminal neuralgia.

The amount of homeopathic remedy to be taken can be different between one individual and another, also depending on the type of disorder that needs to be treated and according to the type of preparation and homeopathic dilution that you want to use.

Contraindications

Avoid taking mullein in case of proven hypersensitivity to one or more components.
