What to do in case of a scorpion bite

The scorpion species present in Italy are relatively harmless to humans. However, a minimum of attention must be paid, as their puncture can cause particularly intense pain, itching, swelling, increased skin temperature, numbness or tingling of the affected part (the symptomatology is similar to that caused by the sting of a wasp). In rare cases, allergic reactions may occur, sometimes of such severity that they are lethal.

If the manifestations take on a general character - nausea, dizziness, muscle spasms, breathing difficulties and weakness appear - it is necessary to go urgently to the emergency room. In milder cases, the sting of the scorpion does not need a special treatment: to mitigate the pain, the application of ice on the affected area and the use of local anesthetics are enough.
