Hemorrhoids: natural remedies

Premise

Concern, pain, embarrassment, itching and bleeding: these are just some of the psychological and physical repercussions that can result from the "appearance" of hemorrhoids or, better to say, the inflammation of the hemorrhoidal plexus that surrounds the anal orifice. As already analyzed several times in the various articles dealing with the hemorrhoid disorder, the search for the causes is decidedly intricate, considering that it is almost impossible to find an unequivocal triggering factor: to the hemorrhoids are connected liver disorders, constipation, tumors, sedentary lifestyle, alcohol abuse, stress, pregnancy, abuse of laxatives and, inevitably, nutrition, which always plays a very important role.

Natural remedies

Following the instructions of your doctor, herbal medicine offers excellent natural remedies against hemorrhoids. Generally, a combined product is recommended: the first for internal use (capsules or tablets), which acts in a systemic way, the second for topical use (ointment, cream or gel), to be applied locally for immediate relief.

Natural capsules

A model of herbal product for internal use (opercula, for example) could consist of drugs such as helichrysum, centella and rusco:

  • Helichrysum ( Helichrysum angustifolium ) its essential oil consists mainly of nerile acetate, which in a product against hemorrhoids gives anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Helichrysum is also known for its anti-edema property (indicated for the haemorrhoidal syndrome): it acts as a decongestant and reduces pain. This action could be enhanced by other plants such as cypress, butcher's broom and centella (vasoactive drugs), or aloe (anti-inflammatory activity).

In this case the helichrysum is inserted in a formulation for internal use, but it could also be present in a cream or a topical ointment.

  • Centella ( Centella asiatica ) and rusco ( Ruscus aculeatus ) represent the founders of saponin drugs, used in the treatment of venous disorders such as hemorrhoids. They are two plants with marked capillarotropic and vasoconstrictor activities: they act at the level of the arterial vessels with a vasoprotective and anti-inflammatory action. Centella asiaticoside and ruscogenina of ruscus act synergistically increasing capillary resistance, and decreasing capillarity and extravasation of blood.

Despite considering a small number of plants, as in this case, the action expressed by them is very effective, since the active ingredients do not involve intestinal toxicity and do not cause irritation, except in sensitive individuals. A product for internal use acts directly on the causes that trigger the disorder, increasing the resistance of the vein walls, decreasing the permeability of the haemorrhoidal plexus, counteracting pain and inflammation, and reducing the dilation of the veins.

Hemorrhoid ointment

Along with the opercula, an oil-based ointment is recommended to be applied topically with aloe vera, hypericum, jojoba oil (or shea butter), cypress and mint essential oil, witch hazel.

  • Aloe ( Aloe vera gel ): aloe is a good help in an ointment against hemorrhoids, since it has an anti-inflammatory, soothing, re-epithelializing and astringent action; consequently it is useful in the treatment of open wounds.
  • Hypericum ( Hypericum perforatum oil extract): the phytocomplex is rich in anthraquinones and tannins, which exhibit interesting healing, disinfectant and astringent properties.
  • Jojoba oil ( Simmondsia chinensis ): in reality it is a wax obtained from jojoba seeds, which is in liquid form (hence the name "oil"). It is inserted in a product for hemorrhoids due to its remarkable antioxidant capacity (expressed by vitamin E) and emollients. As an alternative to jojoba oil, Shea butter expresses the same functions.
  • Cypress essential oil ( Cupressus sempervirens ) and mint ( Mentha x piperita ): essential oils give freshness to the product, promote a pseudo-anesthetic action because they reduce discomfort. For this reason, topical application of this ointment gives immediate relief.
  • Witch hazel ( Hamamelis virgiliana ) finds application in products against hemorrhoids thanks to its marked anti-inflammatory properties (decrease inflammation), astringents (help vasoconstriction) and healing.

Feeding and hemorrhoids

The combined use of these herbal products is not enough: in addition to natural remedies, it would be appropriate to optimize one's diet through the consumption of light, non-spicy or spicy foods - which could enhance the "hemorrhoid" problem - and adopt a style correct life and then, if necessary, consult an expert if the disorder persists.
