Definition

Chickenpox is an extremely contagious infectious disease caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus. The disease is transmitted through the small droplets of saliva dispersed in the air by the patient. Generally, chickenpox is not a very serious disease, but its complications may be; for this reason vaccination is now practiced on many children and adults at risk. For the same reasons, the appearance of varicella symptoms requires an immediate medical examination.

Further indications

The most known symptoms of chickenpox are related to the characteristic appearance of reddish, itchy and raised spots, similar to those caused by the bite of an insect. This rusch can be preceded or accompanied by fever, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, malaise, headache and dry cough. In a short time the small spots, which prefer face, scalp, arms and thorax, evolve into bubbles with a diameter of a few millimeters, filled with clear liquid, to transform themselves again after a few days into crusts. In some cases, especially if scraped, these crusts - which normally fall within a couple of weeks - give way to small scars.
