What is cornea transplant?

The cornea has very limited possibilities for self-repair, so any injuries must be treated very carefully in order to prevent serious consequences for eyesight. Because of pathologies that have irreversibly compromised transparency or curvature, the only treatment option is the replacement of the portion of the ocular surface taken from a donor.

One of the most frequent causes for which the intervention becomes necessary is keratoconus, a disease with a progressive course that causes severe visual impairment and affects young patients.

Transplantation is a tried and tested intervention. Rejection rarely occurs for the cornea, not being a vascularized tissue.
