Leucocoria - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The leukocoria is a symptom that suggests an anomaly of the crystalline lens, the vitreous or the ocular fundus. In the most obvious cases, it appears as a whitish pupillary reflex at the simple observation.

On the other hand, after a light stimulation to check for any ocular pathologies, a red reflex may appear in the dilated pupil.

Leukocoria is often the first sign of retinoblastoma. Furthermore, it can occur in cases of corneal scarring, congenital cataract and retinal dysplasia.
