Cardiovascular diseases: how to stay active even at work

Cardiovascular diseases, or diseases that target the heart and blood vessels (arteries and veins), are the leading cause of death in the world's most industrialized countries .

To play a decisive role on their onset, it is certainly the scarce (if not entirely absent) physical exercise, where for physical exercise is also meant a simple walk of several tens of minutes.

According to a survey by the US website www.heart.org, the reasons for a sedentary lifestyle are to be found even in the lack of time available. In fact, 14% of those who took part in the survey in question replied that they did not have enough time (the famous half an hour a day is often talked about) for regular physical activity.

Since it is often the job that prevents the performance of regular exercise, below are some tips that the experts recommend to sedentary workers (ie those who practice a job where there is very little movement):

  • Always prefer the stairs to the elevator
  • Stand up or, better yet, walk during work calls
  • If you have the opportunity to know the work schedule of the month in advance, plan your moments of physical activity based on this. Planning helps you to be more regular in the exercise .
  • If you travel a lot by plane and spend a lot of time in airports, it is good to stand or, perhaps, walk when you are waiting for your flight.
  • Whenever there is a chance, take a walk or stretch your legs . For example, during the lunch break, take a few minutes for a short walk.
  • Park your motorized transport vehicle a few minutes walk from the workplace. Alternatively, use public transport or the bicycle .
  • If possible, get a desk that allows you to work even while standing.
  • Inquire if there is a gym, swimming pool or similar center near the workplace. Taking the clothes that are used in these places to the office, it is possible to attend them during breaks of a few hours or at the end of the working day.
