Definition

Bacterial vaginosis is a polymicrobial infection of the vagina, to which - with a synergic process - different bacterial species participate, each of which creates conditions suitable for the development of others. Thus there is an alteration in the normal vaginal flora, with a decrease in Lactobacilli and overgrowth of pathogens. Among these microorganisms, a major role is played by Gardnerella vaginalis.

Most common symptoms and signs *

  • Vaginal itching
  • Smelly vaginal secretions
  • Vaginismus

Further indications

While some women suffering from vaginosis do not complain of any symptoms, often there is a marked increase in malodorous vaginal discharge (whose odor is reminiscent of fish), white-greyish and of a homogeneous appearance, which tend to adhere to the walls of the vagina and they make more abundant and smelly after unprotected sexual intercourse (since the vaginal secretion mixes with the alkaline sperm). Symptoms such as intimate itching and vaginal irritation, although sometimes present, are more common in Candida or Trichomonas infections.
