Definition

Swelling, tiredness and fatigue in the feet are common symptoms after a day of intense activity, especially if you remain standing or in a static position for a long time, or if you are wearing uncomfortable footwear, such as heeled shoes.

The swelling of the foot is essentially due to an accumulation of fluid in the subcutaneous adipose tissue.

The most frequent causes of swollen and tired feet are wrong habits, such as wearing stockings, tights and shoes that are too tight or with excessively high heels. They can promote the accumulation of excess liquids, and have negative effects on the blood circulation of the foot, even cigarette smoke, prolonged upright standing, extra pounds, a diet rich in salt and poor physical activity.

Sometimes, a swollen foot is an expression of heart, vascular, rheumatic or metabolic pathologies. The most common pathological causes of swollen and tired feet include chronic venous insufficiency, lymphedema and joint inflammation. Renal, hepatic and cardiac failure may also be responsible for this event.
