Skin erosion - Causes and Symptoms

Related articles: Skin erosion

Definition

Erosion is a lesion of the upper layers of the skin, characterized by a limited, partial or complete loss of the epidermis

Erosions can be traumatic in nature or represent the symptom of various dermatological, inflammatory or infectious pathologies. They are often found in herpes virus and pemphigus manifestations. Non-traumatic forms occur following the rupture of vesicles, blisters or pustules. Typical are the erosions that occur during aphthous or other vesicular diseases of the oral cavity.

Excoriation is a form of linear or depressed erosion that also involves the deeper layers of the epidermis. Generally, it is caused by intense scratching that occurs during itchy diseases, too vigorous rubbing or teasing of the skin. If the lesion also extends to the dermis and part of the hypodermis is called an ulcer.
