E237 - Sodium Formate

Sodium formate is the sodium salt of formic acid.

It is obtained from the synthesis of sodium hydroxide and carbon monoxide. It is a preservative used to protect food from the attack of bacteria, fungi, molds etc.

It can be contained in fruit juices, non-alcoholic drinks, vegetable preserves, etc.

It has been noted that high concentrations of sodium formate can cause a diuretic effect, while at the recommended doses, there are no side effects.

ADI DOSE: 3 mg per kg of body weight.
