The iliac muscle is a muscle located in the iliac fossa and participates in the formation of the posterior abdominal wall. It originates from the iliac fossa, from the internal labrum of the iliac crest, from the two anterior iliac spines, from the interlocking incisive between them and from the wing of the sacrum. Its fibers pass inferiorly and medially under the inguinal ligament and are inserted into the small trochanter of the femur with a common insertion to the large psoas muscle (to which they join together forming the ileopsoas muscle).
With its action it flexes the thigh, medially rotates it and participates in the bending of the trunk.
It is innervated by the femoral nerve (L2, L3).
