E554 ALUMINUM AND SODIUM SILICATE
Aluminum and sodium silicate is a compound produced chemically with an anti-caking, excipient and support function for aromas and dyes.
It can be contained in different food products.
At the moment there are conflicting claims on the effects that this additive can have on human health: some researchers advise against its recruitment especially to pregnant women due to possible problems that could occur to the placenta due to the amount of aluminum contained inside the additive; other researchers, on the other hand, consider this additive for human health harmless as it is not absorbed by the body.
Therefore, given the conflicting hypotheses, frequent consumption is not recommended (especially if one is in one of the groups at risk)

EFSA 2008 NOTE
- In view of the tendency of aluminum to accumulate in the body following dietary exposure, the AFC Panel considered it more appropriate to establish a tolerable weekly intake (TWI) for aluminum instead of a tolerable daily intake (TDI) . Based on the set of indications that emerged from the studies mentioned above, the scientific group has set a TWI of 1 mg of aluminum / kg bw / week.
