Rhinorrhea - Causes and Symptoms

Related articles: Rhinorrea

Definition

Rhinorrhea is a secretion that flows from the nose, or from a paranasal sinus, towards the outside or towards the throat. Commonly referred to as a "runny nose", runny nose can be allergic, infectious or irritative.

Rhinorrhea is a typical symptom of the cold : initially the nasal secretions are watery and clear, then they become dense, whitish or yellowish. Due to the presence of this mucus, the nose tends to close.

Watery rhinorrhea can be the result of an allergy; usually, allergic rhinitis also occurs with sneezing, itching, tearing and conjunctival redness.

In sinusitis, nasal congestion and obstruction are often associated with pain in the paranasal sinuses, aqueous or mucopurulent secretion, often unilateral, anosmia, fever and headache.

The recurrent aqueous retronasal drip and the pallor of the nasal mucosa, on the other hand, occur due to vasomotor rhinitis .

Moreover, rhinorrhea can derive from the presence of polyps, tumors and foreign bodies, and from the excessive use of nasal decongestants.
