Stress and Carbohydrates: The anti-stress diet

Edited by Ivan Mercolini

Carbohydrates in the right moments

I come back to what was mentioned at the end of the previous chapter, namely:

based on circadian rhythms, cortisol is higher in the morning and then gradually diminishes by the afternoon; and this is true regardless of external and food influences.

Having said that, if a person is stressed, his cortisol will be even higher than the physiological one in the morning, with a consequent rise in blood sugar already fasting.

Attention to what I wrote.

A stressed subject usually gets up already snappy and with his eyes wide open, already loaded and ready as if he had to face a bear, since the catecholamines and corticosteroids are already high. And this endocrine picture already involves a blood flow of glucose from the liver ...

Now ... if this subject makes an important breakfast, rich in carbohydrates, COMMIT AN ERROR, as it would further increase the blood sugar level, which would trigger the activation of pancreatic beta cells, with release of copious levels of insulin and increased fat, especially in the areas already mentioned.

Attention to the following considerations:

  • a hyperstressed subject (which some authors categorize as hyperlipogen) never gets along with carbohydrates in general - since it is always hypersurrenic - and this is particularly true in the early part of the day due to the circadian pattern of cortisol.

  • Cortisol and catecholamines, while on one side cannibalize the lean mass, on the other they also remove the reserves of fat and carbohydrates. Therefore, if we are careful to maintain the nitrogen balance and not to excessively stimulate the insulin (keeping carbohydrates under control), this picture can play in favor of weight loss.

To maintain the nitrogen balance it is necessary to increase the intake of high biological value proteins and to take care of carrying out short and intense weight training, which forces the body to conserve muscle mass, considered essential for daily activity at this point.

  • If the subject is overstressed, avoid taking nerves such as coffee, tea and theobromine, which would aggravate the discomfort.

We understand that:

  1. A hyper-adrenal subject, as is the majority of the modern western adult population, must limit the intake of carbohydrates and this is more true in the first part of the day, when cortisol is even higher because of its circadian pattern
  2. A hypersurrenal subject must avoid sympathomimetics / nerves.
  3. A hypersurrenal subject must increase the intake of noble proteins to compensate for the muscle catabolism induced by corticosteroids. The lean mass is important, as well as for an aesthetic factor, also to maintain a high metabolism and reduce the chances of gaining weight.
  4. Our stressed subject will avoid salting foods, since he has high levels of aldosterone
  5. Our subject will drink a lot of water in order to alkalize the body (acidified by the production of ammonia due to protein catabolism)
  6. Our subject will strive to train briefly and intensely as suggested in my HEAVY DUTY lesson, to force the maintenance of lean mass and increase testosterone levels. Short and infrequent training will avoid further affecting the catabolism to which a stressed individual is easy to target.

If few criteria are followed, waiting for an improvement in lifestyle, the person subject of this treatment will be able to exploit his status to lose weight while maintaining the lean mass. In other words, he will be able to reverse the course by 180 °, passing from a subject that gains a lot of weight on his belly, back and intraviscere, to a subject that dries while maintaining a pleasant tone.

The adage that is well suited to this situation is: "If you can't fight them, make them friends".
