Foods that hurt your teeth and cause tooth decay

The health of the teeth is strongly influenced by the diet, which depending on the case can prevent or favor the formation of caries.

In fact, there are some foods that are bad for the teeth because they cause enamel erosion and promote the growth of the bacteria responsible for caries. These foods, called karyogens, possess one or more of the following characteristics:

  • they are rich in simple sugars (sugar or sucrose, honey, fructose, candied nuts, refined cereals, sugary fruit)
  • they are very acidic (carbonated drinks, citrus)
  • the more these foods are soft and sticky, the more harmful they are to your teeth.

Therefore the most cariogenic foods of all are those that are acidic and sweet (like many cola-type drinks) and those rich in sugars and sticky (caramel, chocolate, jam, gummy sweets, lollipops, nougat etc.).

In addition to the quality of the individual food, it is very important to consider the time of day when it is consumed, the frequency of consumption and the combination with other foods. About that:

  • it is preferable to consume cariogenic foods whenever you can brush your teeth.

    Therefore it is very important to avoid eating these foods as a snack or a snack outside the home, or as a meal if it is not possible to brush your teeth;

  • it is preferable to consume cariogenic foods from time to time; in fact, more than the quantity of sugar in each meal, the frequency of consumption of the same is important. For example, if candy is eaten frequently, an acidic environment is continuously created that favors the aggression of the enamel; for this reason, it is certainly less harmful to eat 5 sweets at a time than 5 sweets in 5 different moments of the day
  • after the consumption of cariogenic foods it is advisable to consume foods that are good for the teeth and fight tooth decay (called anticariogens), such as nuts in shell (walnuts, almonds, etc.), fresh non-acid fruits (eg apples or pears with peel), fibrous and raw vegetables, aged cheeses and dairy products.

In the case of teeth already compromised by caries or already subjected to endodontic therapy (filling), attention must also be paid to the consumption of very hard foods. A typical example is given by nougats, nougats, walnuts, chestnuts and hazelnuts. In these cases, the risk is the fracture of some teeth.
