Definition

Tuberculosis is a potentially serious infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs. The responsible bacillus (causative agent) is transmitted from person to person through the small drops of saliva released into the air by the patient. Most people infected with this bacterium do not develop tuberculosis symptoms.

Further indications

Chest pain exacerbated by breathing and coughing (lasting more than three weeks and accompanied by blood emission) are the typical symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis. When the disease affects other organs, the symptoms vary depending on the affected region. For example, tuberculosis in the spine can cause back pain, while the characteristic symptom of the renal form is hematuria (presence of blood in the urine).
