Symptoms and possible complications of abdominal adhesions

Abdominal adhesions are bands of fibrous-cicatricial tissue that form between the pelvic / abdominal organs and alter their normal structure and functionality.

In general, the most affected site is the intestine.

Very often after surgery, abdominal adhesions can be completely asymptomatic or cause more or less intense pain in the abdomen or pelvis.

Moreover, in some subjects, they may be at the origin of episodes of intestinal obstruction, intestinal strangulation and, only in women, infertility.

An intestinal obstruction is an obstruction that occurs at the level of the intestine and which prevents the contents of the intestine from progressing normally. Untreated intestinal obstructions can lead to bleeding, infections and perforations, all at the level of the intestine.

An intestinal strangulation is an abnormal twisting of the intestine, which, in addition to blocking the affected intestinal tract, also interrupts the blood supply. Typical signs of intestinal strangulation are abdominal distention, fever and tachycardia.

Female infertility due to abdominal adhesions occurs when the latter form behind the uterus and fallopian tubes.
