Gum pain - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Gum pain is a symptom that can be caused by multiple factors. Most often, it is due to an inflammation of the gums (gingivitis), which in turn is often a consequence of insufficient or inaccurate oral hygiene. Sometimes, however, a persistent gum pain is a sign of a more serious problem; if neglected, gingivitis can indeed degenerate into periodontitis, with abscess formation and retraction of the gums themselves.

Another possible cause of gum pain is the formation of aphthous ulcers (gum ulcers). Even orthodontic prostheses, bridges and dentures that are not well adapted can be responsible for gum irritation and painful spots. Finally, the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy can increase the sensitivity of the gums which, in some cases, can develop into pain.
