Conati - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The retching is an involuntary phenomenon, due to the contraction of the diaphragmatic and abdominal muscles, which precedes or accompanies vomiting. This act reproduces the sequence of events that occurs in vomit, with the exception of the release of the cardia, so that gastric contents are not expelled.

The griefs give the feeling that there is a need to vomit and may be associated with pallor, cardiopalmus, sweating, hypersalivation and a feeling of nausea.

As for vomiting, this manifestation can be induced by multiple stimuli, including strong emotions, situations of excessive stress, perception of unpleasant odors, headache, motion sickness (the so-called "car sickness"), intense pain, gastrointestinal affections, defects in vision or traumatic brain injury.

An unsuccessful attempt to vomit may depend on respiratory diseases dominated by cough, myocardial infarction, cystic fibrosis, gastroenteritis, hepatitis, appendicitis, cholecystitis and pancreatitis, neurological diseases, metabolic dysfunctions and intoxications of various types.

Retching can also occur among pregnant women and in case of inhalation of irritating gases or penetration of foreign bodies (non-digestible objects) at the esophageal, gastric and intestinal level.
