Definition

Varicocele is the pathological dilation of the testicular (or sperm) veins, which have the task of draining the blood from the testicle. It is a condition similar to varicose veins (generally affecting the legs) which is quite common especially among men with reduced fertility. The most feared complication of this disorder is in fact a decrease in sperm quality and quantity (oligospermia), although not all varicoceles determine this condition.

Further indications

Usually the varicocele does not give symptoms, except some discomfort or painful attack from time to time, especially with the heat, after a hard exercise, at the end of a sexual relationship, or after a prolonged time in an upright position .. The dilated veins can be visible and easily recognized on palpation by an expert hand (feeling of palpating a bag of worms); sometimes the affected testicle may be smaller than the contralateral one. If fertility decreases significantly, a simple surgical correction of varicocele often leads to a significant improvement in sperm quality and mobility.
