Carotid angioplasty with stenting: post-operative phase

Carotid angioplasty with stenting is a non-surgical medical procedure, through which vascular surgeons "release" the occluded or severely restricted carotid arteries.

This dangerous pathological condition - which in medical language is defined as an obstructive disease of the carotid arteries - is a possible consequence of atherosclerosis and may be at the origin of episodes of ischemic stroke or TIA ( transient ischemic attack ).

Except for complications, carotid angioplasty with stenting lasts 1-2 hours.

At the end, a short period of hospitalization (2-6 hours) is foreseen, during which the patient is invited to lie down as much as possible to reduce the leakage of blood from the catheter insertion areas.

SUTURES FOR HEMORRHAGES

In some cases, the areas where the catheters are inserted (inguinal artery or brachial artery) could be sutured or plugged to avoid blood loss. These are temporary remedies and, in the case of sutures, they can be absorbed.

RESIGNATION

The patient can be discharged on the same day as the procedure (if the procedure took place early in the morning) or the following day . The hospitalization of several hours is completely precautionary: the vital parameters are monitored, step by step.

DRUG ASSUMPTIONS

For the entire month following surgery, the patient should take aspirin and clopidogrel . These two drugs are used to prevent the formation of dangerous blood clots.

Doctors recommend not interrupting therapy, unless it is indicated to them.

WHAT NOT TO DO

For the first periods, it is good not to lift weights and not to make excessive efforts . The return to daily activities must take place gradually.
