Hyperlordosis - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Lumbar hyperlordosis is an accentuation of the lumbar curvature of the spine (which projects the pelvis backwards). In particular, the condition is considered pathological when the angle of lumbar curvature is greater than 40-50 °, therefore the subject carries the buttocks excessively and the abdomen forward.

Hyperlordosis can be caused by congenital alterations of the pelvis or derive from pathological processes affecting the vertebral column; these include fractures, rickets, herniated discs and osteoporosis.

In some cases, hyperlordosis results from postural defects. Furthermore, an accentuation of the physiological lordosis also occurs during the last months of pregnancy.
