Appearance of painful and itchy roundish vesicles - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The appearance in waves of itchy maculas, red-vinous, which over time evolve into small blisters and crusts destined to fall, is a typical manifestation of chickenpox .

The rash of this disease occurs 11-15 days after infection. From 24 to 36 hours before the appearance of varicellose skin lesions, prodromal symptoms may occur which include general malaise, irritability, loss of appetite, mild headache and usually moderate fever (around 38.5 ° C).

The initial macular eruption appears on the chest, face, scalp, abdomen, thighs and upper part of the arms; varicella rash can be generalized (in severe cases) or more limited, but almost always affects the upper part of the trunk. Within a few hours, the small spots are transformed into vesicles on an erythematous background, often intensely itchy. Later, the lesions become pustular and are replaced by crusts (the process takes about 4 or 5 days).

The varicella rash has the characteristic of occurring in successive waves, therefore on the body there will be lesions at different stages of maturation (in practice, some macules appear when the previous vesicles begin to evolve into scabs). The new lesions usually cease to appear starting from the 5th day and most of the vesicles are in the crust phase starting from the 6th day; most of the scabs disappear within 20 days of the onset of the disease.

Before it was completely eradicated, chickenpox could easily be confused with smallpox . Unlike the latter, however, varicellose lesions have a variable size depending on the moment in which they are created, while smallpox pustules are all about the same size. In addition, the varicella exanthema does NOT normally locate in the palms and soles of the feet.
