Bulbous and reddened nose - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

A swollen and reddened nose, known as the rhinophyma medical term, is observed almost exclusively in the final stage of acne rosacea.

The rhinophyma is characterized by a coarse accumulation of tissue (hyperplasia) above and around the nose, which appears bulbous and lumpy. In various degrees, vasodilatation, deposition of phlogistic infiltrates, lymphedema and sebaceous gland hypertrophy are also present. Who has a bulbous nose generally suffers from other abnormalities, such as a thickened or rough skin, covered by fine spider veins, with dilated hair follicles from which oily material can escape. The combination of these alterations leads to the onset of dark red-purple and to the disproportionate swelling of the nose.

The only treatment capable of resolving this deformation is surgery, which is useful for removing excess tissue and reshaping the soft tissues of the nose.
