Colorblind glasses and future perspectives

Currently, there are no conclusive therapies for color blindness ; however, considering the genetic origin of the disorder, one could take advantage of gene therapy .

The approach - so far attempted only at an experimental level on animal models - involves the replacement of one or more defective genes (responsible for specific forms of color blindness) with the corresponding healthy versions, by injections under the retina. Although promising, the efficacy and practicability of the method in humans must be confirmed by further studies.

The colorblind subjects, at the moment, can benefit from lenses equipped with special filters that help to distinguish some colors. An example is the Oxy-Iso, developed by neurobiologist Mark Changizi; if worn by people suffering from color blindness, these lenses allow you to see red and green, unfortunately with the side effect of attenuating the perception of yellow and blue.
