External oblique

The OBLIQUE OUTDOOR MUSCLE OF THE ABDOMEN originates from the outer face of the 5a-12a coasts (LAST EIGHT THIGHS) by means of eight fleshy digits. The bundles that originated from the 11th and 12th coasts are inserted on the outer lip of the iliac crest.

The other bundles are oriented medially and downwards and continue in the aponeurosis. It participates medially in the formation of the linea alba; inferiorly it is inserted at the iliac spine and at the pubic tubercle and above the xiphoid process of the sternum.

Between the pubic tubercle and the anterior superior iliac spine, the passage between the muscular part and the aponeurotic part follows a transverse direction; the aponeurosis then continues downwards in the inguinal ligament.

With its action it lowers the ribs (expiratory muscle), flexes and inclines the thorax laterally and rotates it on the opposite side; its contraction also determines an increase in abdominal pressure, necessary to withstand the forces acting on the spine during certain exercises (see: Valsalva maneuver).

It is innervated by the intercostal nerves (T5-T12) and by the ileoipogastric and ileoinguinal nerves of the lumbar plexus (L1)

ORIGIN

Originates with 8 digits from the outer surface and from the lower edge of the last 8 ribs (5a-12a)

INSERTION

External lip of the iliac crest, pubis, symphysis pubis, xiphoid process, linea alba

ACTION

Lower the ribs (expiratory muscle); flexes and tilts the chest sideways and rotates it on the opposite side; increases intra-abdominal pressure

INNERVATION

Nerve i ncostcostali (T5-T12), ileoipogastric and ileoinguinal nerves of the lumbar plexus (L1)
