Throat itch - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The itch in the throat is among the first symptoms that are felt in case of irritation or inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. Very annoying, it can be associated with a dry and insistent cough, local redness, hoarseness, dysphonia and difficulty swallowing (dysphagia).

At the origin of the itch in the throat there are often inflammatory processes (laryngitis and pharyngitis) or infections that affect the pharynx, larynx and upper part of the trachea (especially influenza).

To trigger the itching can also be the habit of smoking, the inhalation of irritating substances (eg atmospheric particulates, spray products, etc.), cold air and allergic reactions.

In other cases, itchy throat may be a consequence of prolonged exposure to irritating gastric acids that flow back from the alimentary canal.
