Arteriosclerosis is defined as the process of degeneration of the arteries, especially those of medium and large caliber. Very often, arteriosclerosis is described as a simple pathology due to a deposit of lipid material on the walls of the vessels which, with the passage of time, increased in volume by narrowing the lumen of the vessel itself. Artery occlusion, however, is not one of the main factors triggering the heart attack; rather, the detachment of fragments from these lipid accumulations, known as atheromas or atherosclerotic masses, is often responsible.
