Gainers - are complete supplements, consisting of the three main macronutrients mixed in slightly variable proportions from one manufacturer to another, and enriched, in some cases, with other important elements both from a nutritional and metabolic point of view.

The gainers are born with the main objective of enriching the athlete's nutrition from the caloric point of view, and of facilitating the consequent increase in weight while trying to minimize the digestive effort, and making the intake as simple as possible . It is precisely in this context, therefore, that in the production of gainers those nutrients that are more suited to the athlete's needs are preferred, in proportions particularly difficult to find in foods. In fact, the same result in terms of caloric increase could be obtained simply by programming a richer diet, but with the risk, especially in the period close to training, of engaging the body too much in digestion and negatively influencing performance. To a nutritional type factor, there are also other logistical factors that tip the scales towards the gainers: more precisely, the simplicity of preparation and the easy method of consumption make these supplements particularly suitable for meals consumed in the dressing room of a gym.

Common place, often suggested also by the same manufacturers to expand their clientele but absolutely to deny, is to consider these products as effective and efficient substitutes for the main meals. In fact, although in macroscopic nutritional terms they can approach a complete meal, they absolutely cannot reproduce the unique functional integrity of the various foods, nor can they satisfy the emotional and relational needs linked to the conviviality of the meal.

Reducing the human organism to a machine characterized by tested and repetitive mechanisms and identical in every part, is one of the most important mistakes made when applying dietary plans and schematic supplementary protocols, almost "in table".

Therefore, if these products, properly used, are well suited to the nutritional needs of athletes, they must always and in any case be considered as adjuvants to a balanced and healthy diet, and not as substitutes.

The uses of gainers

Although the literature does not offer specific results related to the efficacy of these products in sports supplementation, it reaffirms the importance of well balanced meals in optimizing athletic performance and improving body composition.

Therefore the use of these products in an attempt to:

  1. Increase the weight;
  2. Increase muscle mass;
  3. Protect the muscle from damage induced by intense exercise;
  4. Improve the recovery phase;
  5. Improve athletic performance.

If some of these objectives are directly related to the nutritional and energy effect of these products, others can be considered legitimate repercussions of a general improvement in the body's energy functions.

Product Features Gainer Pro - ProAction

The Pro Action Gainer product provides:

43.5% of Carbohydrates: consisting of maltodextrin and fructose, which guarantee high energy availability. Unfortunately, the absence of data on the dextrose equivalence of the maltodextrins used does not allow a more careful evaluation of this product and of the relative indications of use.

34.7% of Proteins : derived from high quality protein sources such as instantaneous whey protein and micellar casein. This combination, as shown by the various studies, could be advantageous:

during performance, reducing muscle proteolysis thanks to the pull of plasma amino acids released gradually by micellar casein;

in the immediate recovery phase, thanks to the presence of whey proteins able to provide a rapid source of amino acids, and to the stimulus on insulin secretion which enhances the anabolic effect of training.

8.8% of Fats: part of which (unfortunately not quantifiable) unsaturated derived from soy lecithin.

B vitamins: fundamental in supporting the dense crossroads of metabolic reactions necessary to guarantee the correct utilization of the various nutrients. The addition of B vitamins is an important choice in terms of nutritional economy, as their needs increase significantly with increasing food intake.

Vitamin C: ascorbic acid L, a powerful antioxidant able to regenerate vitamin E, able to effectively counteract the damage induced by intense exercise, capable of significantly increasing the intestinal absorption of iron, as well as reducing and activating folic acid in the relative coenzymatic forms.

From a sporting point of view the aforementioned effects take the form of a reduced feeling of fatigue and a consequent improvement in performance. 100 grams of product are able to satisfy the average daily requirement of vitamin C.

Suggested use by the company - Gainer Pro - ProAction

Dissolve 50 grams of product in 300 ml of water and / or milk.

Use in sports - Gainer Pro - ProAction

Although the manufacturer defines without distinction this gainer product, recovery drink or meal replacement, then recommending the daily dose of 50 grams, it would be appropriate to reduce this product to a good pre and post workout snack. Unfortunately, the lack of information on the amino acid profile and the type of maltodextrin used does not allow us to fully understand how much the gainer in question is suitable for the pre-competitive or post-training ration. The quantities to be used naturally should be suggested based on the diet of each athlete, and also adapted to the type of training and objectives to be achieved. Despite this, the relationships between the proposed nutrients are certainly more suited to a post-workout snack than a pre-race one; in any case, it would always be advisable to take it on an empty stomach, and never as a meal replacement.

Side Effects Gainer Pro - ProAction

Although no potential side effects are described in the literature, it should always be taken into account that the excessive introduction of these products could cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and gastrointestinal symptoms.

Instead, it is very important to reiterate the potential effects associated with a prolonged and unbalanced administration of these products, which would inevitably result in a weight gain with related physical and metabolic disorders.

Precautions for use Gainer Pro - ProAction
