The correct approach to food supplements

Edited by Ivan Mercolini

How to do?

At this point we summarize:

  1. The procedures with which studies on supplements are carried out are often wrong. Often suitable subjects are not used, or the study is protracted for too short a time, or the correct training is missing, or the doses are underestimated, or the scientists are not prepared about the topic (very often) ...
  2. Study results can be inflated to meet the profit needs of lenders.
  3. Italian legislation is strict regarding the issue of free sale permits. If a product has significant advantages, then possible significant side effects (dependent dose and frequency), it is subtracted from the market or even enters it, becoming a prescription drug.
  4. Italian labels often carry different ingredients and dosages compared to the original labels (generally underestimated).
  5. Last but not least, original labels often do not state the exact content.

Beautiful overview, right?

So what can the consumer who intends to make a smart purchase do?

First of all, he must assess whether he actually needs an integrator, consulting with his personal trainer. In general, however, it is good to have at least one year of training plus diet before starting to touch this field. Minimum. Then, I repeat, it may still not be necessary to integrate.

Second, the consumer / student must know that "old is better". So do not throw yourself on the market news, but on products that have been tested and re-tested in order to make the aforementioned points 1 and 2 unlikely. For point 3 there is no solution. Such is the law.

For points 4 and 5, being unable to carry out costly analyzes on the product, it can reduce the risk margin by turning to companies of world renown, with larger and more established laboratories. I don't name names because it doesn't seem ethical. And it can finally reasonably understand that if the price is low ... it stinks!

All clear?

Now, suppose you have verified that you objectively need to spend on one or more supplements. Which to use among the various active principles? In what doses? Such as?

Below, the overview of the supplements for him and her with the best pedigree ("old", tested, undoubted efficacy). I divided the products by volume by those for the definition and by those throughout the year, those for him by those for her. I will not set out the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic characteristics, as there is already abundant literature on this site. I refer you to the relevant links.

  • Useful supplements all year round, for him and her
  • Supplements to increase muscle mass
  • Supplements for the definition
  • Too much emphasis on supplements
