Even domestic cats can suffer from strabismus

The axes of the cat's eyes normally run along parallel planes; any deviations of the ocular axis give rise to cases of strabismus . Usually, the defect is of a congenital nature (present from birth) and does not involve serious problems in the feline. Indeed, it is considered a distinctive trait of some breeds. Strabismus is found mainly in the Siamese, Himalayan, Burmese and albino cats.

The eyes diverted to a previously normal adult animal, on the other hand, can indicate the presence of problems that deserve the immediate attention of the veterinarian. The sudden onset of strabismus may be the consequence of hydrocephalus, injury to the eyes or brain, tumor processes, encephalitis, meningitis and infection with feline leukemia virus (FeLV). In these cases, the cat may exhibit other symptoms, such as weakness or difficulty in standing on its feet, a tendency to tilt the head, reduced appetite, lethargy and convulsions.
